Small Appalachian Market Basket
The Small Appalachian Market Basket by Billie Ruth Sudduth is a plaited market style basket with a woven handle, sturdy enough to carry your favorite items. The split oak handle is wrapped for additional strength. This basket could carry apples, books, or picnic foods to spread on a blanket.
It is dyed with a special stain I make to make the wood look distressed. It will become more beautiful with age. It looks like it came out of a barn decades ago and will last for decades to come.
I left a career as a school psychologist and have been a full time basket maker for 34 years. Many of my baskets are in private and museum collections including the Smithsonian and the Museum of Art and Design.
I live just over the ridge from the world famous Penland School of Crafts in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains where I have a studio that is open to the public.
The basket is signed, dated, and numbered. It measures 15 inches long by 11 inches wide by 11 inches high.
