Fibonacci in Reverse

Fibonacci in Reverse is a twill woven basket using the numbers from Fibonacci’s Nature Sequence to create the design. The directional changes are Archimedes spirals. The base is a herringbone twill and a cat’s head shape, made to sit balanced on its four feet.

It is dyed with iron oxide for the black and crushed walnut hulls. It takes two weeks to get the depth of color for the black – a week in the dye vat then a week in a salt, vinegar, and water bath to set the color.

My materials are carved on a shave horse using a draw knife. The basket is hand shaped without the use of a mold. No two are ever exactly alike. These are photos of the actual basket that is for sale and is ready for immediate shipping.

Many of my Fibonacci baskets are in museums permanent collections including the Smithsonian and the Museum of Art and Design. I have been a basket maker for 34 years and have made over 10,000 baskets. I am in my studio every day creating new work. Weaving is much like playing music as there is such rhythm to it. You can see the music I create.

The basket measures 11 1/2 inches high by 17 inches in diameter. It is shipped priority mail with tracking and is singed, dated, and numbered.
